West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that he will disclose the findings of the Justice Susanta Chatterjee Commission, set up by the previous Trinamool Congress government, investigating the deaths of 13 Youth Congress workers in police firing during a protest rally on July 21, 1993. The report’s release coincides with the upcoming Martyrs’ Day observed by different factions within Trinamool Congress.
The commission was established by the Trinamool Congress government in 2011 and was chaired by Justice Sushant Chatterjee. Chief Minister Adhikari emphasized the importance of making the report public to assess the previous government’s adherence to the commission’s recommendations. The report’s contents will be shared with the people of Bengal based on factual evidence.
The tragic incident occurred during a protest march led by Mamata Banerjee, then associated with the Congress, towards the state secretariat, Writers’ Buildings, in 1993. The police firing on the Youth Congress procession resulted in the deaths of 13 workers. Since then, Mamata Banerjee has annually observed Martyrs’ Day on July 21 to honor the victims, with separate events organized by the Congress.
