The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has received approval from the West Bengal government to frame charges against former R.G. Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh. The delay in granting permission for the charge-framing process was attributed to the previous Trinamool Congress-led government. However, with the change in power to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has pledged to remove obstacles for a swift investigation and justice in the financial irregularities case at R.G. Kar.
The trial process under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) at a special court for the R.G. Kar financial irregularities case had been stalled due to the lack of approval from the previous state government to frame charges against Ghosh. With the recent clearance, the trial against him is set to resume. The Enforcement Directorate has informed the special PMLA court judge about the approval granted by the West Bengal government to initiate the charge-framing process against Ghosh.
Sandip Ghosh, identified as a key accused in the financial irregularities case by the ED, had faced delays in the framing of charges against him. The state government’s approval is a prerequisite for filing charges against a prominent figure, as in Ghosh’s case. The state health department’s consent, which had been withheld during the previous administration, was necessary for proceeding with the trial against Ghosh.
In addition to Ghosh, the ED’s chargesheet also implicated two media equipment contractors, Biplab Sinha and Suman Hazra, marking the first chargesheet in the case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had also filed charges in the same matter, underscoring the multi-agency probe into the financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College.
