The West Bengal Police faced an attack in the Nazat Police Station area of North 24 Parganas district while trying to halt illegal construction on a piece of land. Locals threw bricks and stones at the officers, resulting in injuries to several police personnel and damage to a police vehicle. Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and authorities are interrogating the head of the Boyarmari II Gram Panchayat along with others. To manage the situation, a significant police presence has been deployed in the area.
The confrontation occurred on Friday night in the Chuchura area of Boyarmari II Gram Panchayat, falling under the jurisdiction of the Najat police station in Basirhat. Police responded to a complaint regarding unauthorized construction on the land, which was under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure as per a court order. Allegedly, supporters of Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, currently in custody, attempted construction in violation of the court order, leading to the police intervention. Despite police orders to cease construction, the accused individuals resisted, escalating the situation.
The situation turned violent when the accused individuals engaged in a heated argument with the police, culminating in an attack with bricks and stones on the officers. Subsequently, a police vehicle was damaged, prompting the dispatch of additional law enforcement to restore order. Authorities have vowed to take strict action against those involved in the illegal construction and the assault on the police. An investigation is ongoing, with eight arrests made and several others detained, as the search continues for remaining suspects.
