The West Bengal Police has ordered a “debit freeze” on three Trinamool Congress bank accounts in central Kolkata. This freeze blocks outgoing transactions but allows incoming deposits. Cash withdrawals, fund transfers, debit card transactions, and bill payments are currently restricted. Former Trinamool Congress treasurer Aroop Biswas requested the freeze on these accounts earlier this week.
Some rebel Trinamool Congress legislators, led by expelled member Ritabrata Banerjee, lodged a complaint with the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station. They alleged that money obtained through corrupt practices during the previous government was stashed in these accounts. The police sought details from the bank and discovered that a total of Rs 440 crore had been deposited in these accounts.
In response, investigating officials decided to freeze the accounts to prevent any further transactions. Sandipan Saha, a prominent member of the rebel Trinamool Congress camp, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the source and legitimacy of the funds. Trinamool Congress legislator Kunal Ghosh, a supporter of Mamata Banerjee, confirmed his awareness of the situation and is monitoring the developments closely.
