West Bengal is set to become the 36th State/Union Territory in India to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), a significant step towards universal health coverage. The state will formally join the health insurance scheme through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Health Authority (NHA) and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal.
The MoU signing event will be overseen by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and will be attended by key leaders and officials from both the central government and West Bengal. Notable attendees include West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Union Ministers of State Pratap Rao Jadhav and Anupriya Patel, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava, and West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal.
West Bengal’s inclusion in AB PM-JAY is expected to enhance healthcare coverage by offering eligible families health insurance of up to Rs 5 lakh annually for secondary and tertiary hospitalization. The scheme’s objective is to alleviate the financial burden of medical costs on vulnerable households and enhance access to quality healthcare services through a wide network of empanelled hospitals.
The Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY initiative has become a crucial component of India’s healthcare system, providing financial protection against major health expenses and enabling millions to access treatment without concerns about affordability. By joining the program, residents of West Bengal will also benefit from the scheme’s portability feature, allowing them to receive cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals nationwide. Officials anticipate that this step will not only bolster healthcare services in the state but also support the overarching goal of ensuring accessible and affordable healthcare for all citizens.
