West Indies have made a change in their squad for the ODI series against New Zealand as all-rounder Justin Greaves is out due to a back injury. Left-handed batter Shimron Hetmyer has been brought in as a replacement. Greaves has returned to Barbados for rehabilitation, and his availability for the upcoming matches will be decided after further assessment by Cricket West Indies (CWI).
Hetmyer’s inclusion follows the early conclusion of his Major League Cricket commitments. He missed the initial games of the series due to his participation with the Seattle Orcas. With the franchise not making it to the playoffs, Hetmyer is now back with the national team setup.
Despite playing all 10 league matches for the Orcas, Hetmyer’s performance was modest with 164 runs at an average of 20.50. Greaves, who will be missed by the hosts, had a remarkable Test series against Sri Lanka, scoring a career-best 180 in the second Test. West Indies, having won the first ODI against New Zealand, are currently leading the five-match series 1-0.
The remaining squad for the upcoming ODIs will be announced after assessing Greaves’ fitness. The series will continue in Providence before moving to Bridgetown for the final two matches.
