Meta-owned WhatsApp has launched global reservations for usernames, aiming to enhance user privacy by safeguarding their phone numbers. The feature, set to roll out on Monday, allows users to create and reserve a unique username before its in-app release later this year. When the reservations go live, users will receive notifications within the app, emphasizing the importance of selecting a distinctive username known only to desired contacts.
According to WhatsApp, usernames serve as a means of contact without revealing one’s phone number, offering a personalized identifier independent of other platforms. The platform clarified that this feature prioritizes privacy over social media functionality, with no public directory or suggestions available. To initiate contact using a username, individuals must possess the exact username, ensuring a secure communication environment.
Users can now share their exclusive usernames instead of phone numbers, ensuring the protection of personal contact details. WhatsApp also introduced a “username key” feature, enabling users to control message accessibility by requiring a key for initial contact via username, adding an extra layer of security. The key can be modified at any time to manage message permissions effectively.
Meta’s recent announcement revealed that Kunal Shah, the founder of CRED, will assume the role of WhatsApp’s global CEO under Meta’s leadership. Additionally, Meta disclosed an investment of approximately $900 million in CRED, a significant move in the fintech sector.
