WhatsApp is set to launch a new feature that will allow users to create usernames and unique IDs, enabling them to send messages and make calls without sharing their phone numbers. This update is expected to be available worldwide by June 2026. Both individuals and businesses will have the option to reserve unique handles, similar to other social media platforms. The company stated, “We are excited to bring usernames to WhatsApp in the future to help people connect with new friends, groups, and businesses without having to share their phone numbers.”
WhatsApp users will have the choice to use usernames or stick with their phone numbers, as the feature will be optional. This flexibility aims to prevent any disruptions and retain users who might consider switching to other platforms. Additionally, WhatsApp is considering a dynamic pricing model for businesses, allowing companies to bid in real-time for sending marketing messages. Reports suggest that this new system might undergo testing in the latter half of 2026 and could be fully operational by 2027.
With over 500 million users, India remains a crucial market for WhatsApp globally. A recent report highlighted the significant influence of social media platforms on retail purchase decisions in India, with Meta platforms driving a majority of social discovery. The report, by Meta and the Retailers Association of India (RAI), emphasized the role of short-form videos and creators in accelerating product discovery, with a large percentage of consumers engaging with short videos daily. Moreover, the report indicated that a substantial portion of product discovery activities occurs on WhatsApp.
