The White House defended its actions concerning Venezuela, emphasizing that the US now has significant influence over the country’s interim authorities. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted a recent US operation, stating that the US holds “maximum leverage” over Venezuela.
Leavitt mentioned that the US administration is working closely with Venezuela’s interim authorities and has gained access to Venezuelan oil previously held offshore under sanctions. She confirmed that the oil would be sold in global markets, with the proceeds initially channeled through US-controlled accounts.
Regarding military involvement, Leavitt clarified that there are no US troops on the ground in Venezuela but emphasized that the option of military force remains open if necessary. She also reiterated the US stance of not recognizing the former Venezuelan president as a legitimate leader.
The White House also addressed discussions about Greenland’s strategic significance amid increasing geopolitical competition. Leavitt stated that the acquisition of Greenland by the US has historical precedence dating back to the 1800s and could help counter rising Russian and Chinese activities in the Arctic region.
