High-speed winds in the Sopore area blew off roofs from houses as a windstorm and hailstorm hit various parts of the Kashmir Valley on Tuesday.
The evening brought gusty winds, followed by rain, thunderstorms, and hail, causing damage to some houses in Sopore. Additionally, a hailstorm was reported in the Nishar area on the outskirts of Srinagar city.
Erratic weather conditions have persisted in the Valley over the past week, leading to extensive damage in many apple orchards in the south and north due to hailstorms. Paddy nurseries and vegetables in some areas have also suffered damage.
The local MET office had predicted rain, thundershowers, and hail over several regions including Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, and other areas. An advisory urged people to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid loose structures, electric wires, and old trees, and suspend boating activities on water bodies.
The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing volatile weather patterns with sudden shifts between heatwaves and thunderstorms. Recent climatic disruptions have altered the region’s traditional climate, with record-breaking temperatures and frequent hailstorms affecting agriculture.
