In Bangladesh, a tragic incident occurred in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar District, where 55-year-old Syada Begum lost her life while trying to shield her son during an assault. The attack was reportedly triggered by a social media post that led to a violent confrontation involving workers of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its student wing, Chhatra Dal.
According to reports, the incident stemmed from slogans written on a wall a few days earlier, leading to a complaint filed by local BNP leaders against activists of the Awami League and its student wing, Chhatra League. The situation escalated when a Chhatra Dal worker made a social media post about the graffiti, which was met with a laughter reaction from another individual associated with Chhatra Dal.
Following the online exchange, a group of BNP and Chhatra Dal workers allegedly attacked the individual who reacted with laughter, prompting another person to intervene. Syada Begum, upon learning of the attack on her son, rushed to protect him and was tragically pushed to the ground during the altercation. Despite being taken to a health facility, she succumbed to her injuries.
Imran, the son of the deceased, accused several individuals, including local BNP leaders and their associates, of instigating the attack without any provocation. Expressing his grief and seeking justice, he emphasized that his family was not involved in politics and called for accountability for his mother’s untimely death.
Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, condemned the assault, labeling it as a disgraceful incident for any civilized society. Stressing the importance of upholding political tolerance, he urged the government to take decisive action, emphasizing the need for impartial investigations and holding perpetrators accountable, regardless of their political affiliations.
