In a bold incident on GST Road in Tambaram, Chennai, a 22-year-old woman, who was on her way to a civil services exam coaching class, thwarted a chain snatcher’s attempt on Tuesday. Despite sustaining minor injuries, she managed to resist the attacker, leading to a public pursuit that resulted in the recovery of her gold jewelry valued at Rs 8 lakh.
The robbery occurred around 1 p.m. near the Hindu Mission Hospital signal, a bustling area known for heavy foot and vehicle traffic. The assailant, dressed in a lungi and shirt, snatched the woman’s gold chains, including her ‘gold thaali,’ totaling seven sovereigns of gold.
Instead of succumbing to panic, the woman bravely fought back, attracting the attention of passersby and shopkeepers, who joined in chasing the suspect. During the struggle, the chains broke as the robber tried to flee towards the railway boundary wall, eventually discarding the stolen jewelry on the roadside sand before escaping.
Following a quick search, the recovered chains brought relief to the victim, who was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is now in stable condition. The Tambaram police have initiated an investigation into the incident, suspecting that the thief disposed of the jewelry to avoid being caught with evidence.
The incident has raised concerns about public safety in the area, with residents highlighting a surge in chain-snatching and other crimes. Police authorities have assured the community of heightened patrols and enhanced security measures to combat such offenses and ensure the well-being of pedestrians, particularly women, in the vicinity.
