Women in various states are achieving self-reliance and financial independence by participating in Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and benefiting from women empowerment initiatives introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. In Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, women are embracing self-sufficiency through these programs, focusing on self-generated resources rather than external assistance. Members of SHGs in the region shared their journeys towards independence, highlighting the positive impact of government schemes.
These women acknowledged the support of the Central government, particularly mentioning schemes like the Pradhan Mantri SVANidhi Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana aimed at empowering women. As a result, many women in Nahan have initiated their own businesses, producing items such as papad, namkeen, chutney, pickles, and other homemade products that are well-received in the market, contributing to their financial stability.
The self-reliant women from SHGs have leveraged their earnings from product sales to offer low-interest loans within the group, facilitating other women’s business ventures. Suman, President of the M.C. Self-Help Group, highlighted the diverse range of products being created, including baskets, clothing, snacks, and more, underscoring the group’s collective progress and the benefits derived from government initiatives. Promila, President of the Disha Self-Help Group, emphasized the growing financial independence among women, exemplified by their entrepreneurial endeavors in pickle-making, snack preparation, and papad production.
