Women are increasingly being implicated in drug smuggling activities from Myanmar, as security forces apprehended three females in Mizoram with heroin worth Rs 4.75 crore. Acting on intelligence inputs, Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police set up a joint checkpost in the Keifang area of northern Mizoram’s Saitual district. The operation led to the arrest of three women and the recovery of 634 grams of heroin, valued at Rs 4.755 crore in the illicit market.
The seized narcotics and the arrested women were handed over to Mizoram Police in Saitual district for further investigation and legal proceedings. Mizoram’s Saitual district, sharing borders with Manipur and Myanmar, has seen an increase in women participating in drug smuggling activities. This incident underscores the commitment of Assam Rifles in combating drug trafficking and ensuring the safety of Mizoram residents.
Authorities are concerned about the rising involvement of women from Mizoram in smuggling narcotics from Myanmar to various states in India. In a recent crackdown, Mizoram Police arrested eight women in Champhai district, seizing heroin worth over Rs 70 lakh in six separate operations on a single day. These women, aged between 19 and 53 and from different districts of Mizoram, were involved in drug peddling activities.
The Mizoram Police highlighted that the seizures were part of routine checks to curb drug trafficking along the India-Myanmar border. The porous border between Myanmar’s Chin State and Mizoram’s border-linked districts has been a transit route for smuggling narcotics and other contraband into India. Security agencies have repeatedly raised concerns about transnational smuggling syndicates exploiting this border for illegal activities, with drug trafficking posing a significant challenge for law enforcement in the region.
