Several women lawyers in Bangladesh gathered in a human chain to seek justice against two lawyers associated with the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The protest, organized by the ‘General Lawyers’ group, occurred at the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court premises. The demonstrators specifically called for action against Narayanganj city BNP member secretary Abu Al Yusuf Khan Tipu and lawyer Rafiqul Ahmed.

The assaulted lawyer, Amena Akter Shilpi, accused Rafiqul of attacking her during a dispute about removing hawkers from the court area. Shilpi clarified that she was not involved in the eviction, which was directed by the bar association’s president and secretary. The situation worsened when Tipu reportedly made derogatory remarks about female lawyers, referring to them as “dancers” during a media interaction.

Shamsun Noor Bandhan, a Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum district unit joint convener, urged the bar association leaders and the BNP central leadership to conduct a fair investigation and ensure swift justice. The incident comes amidst growing concerns over violence against women and children in Bangladesh, with calls to strengthen prevention measures and support services for victims.
