The World Economic Forum (WEF) has introduced a new skills accelerator in India, expanding a global network of 45 national accelerators that have collectively assisted 14.8 million individuals. These accelerators, as per the WEF, unite government, business, and civil society to implement global insights into specific actions for employment, skills development, and inclusive economic growth. The India Accelerator, part of this initiative, aims to overcome obstacles to fair skilling in the country.
The WEF’s 56th annual meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, concluded positively with significant global commitments to invest in skills development for workers. The national accelerators within the network concentrate on enhancing skills for the evolving economy, emphasizing human-centric capabilities, AI, digital technologies, sustainability, trade, vocational pathways, and business fundamentals. The Reskilling Revolution initiative, a part of this effort, is on course to benefit over 850 million people globally, nearing its goal of empowering 1 billion individuals with improved access to skills, education, and economic prospects.
The WEF highlighted that more than 25 technology companies have pledged support to assist 120 million workers with AI access, skills training, and job opportunities. Simultaneously, India has launched its national skills Accelerator, with the aim of rapidly expanding industry-aligned training and enhancing employability for millions of workers. Given the rapid transformations in global labor markets due to artificial intelligence, geo-economic shifts, and the energy transition, preparing workers for the future economy is a critical global concern.
The new commitments encompass corporate pledges, university-employer collaborations, and national skills accelerators focused on reshaping how individuals enter the workforce, transition between jobs, and sustain employability in an AI-driven economy. Saadia Zahidi, Managing Director at the World Economic Forum, emphasized the importance of adapting to the changing global economy. She stated that the future of work’s impact on workers relies on learning opportunities, support for job transitions, and encouragement for entrepreneurship. The recent announcements signify proactive steps to ensure that the future of work offers equal opportunities for all.
