The World Intellectual Foundation (WIF) unveiled the Responsible Nations Index (RNI) 2026 report in Bengaluru. This unique index evaluates how countries treat the planet and its people, aiming to go beyond traditional power and economic metrics. India introduced the RNI in January this year, focusing on ethical governance, social well-being, environmental stewardship, and global responsibility.
The WIF Chairman, Professor Jagdish Mukhi, highlighted the need for a new index not dominated by powerful nations. He emphasized that existing indices often prioritize military strength and power, neglecting broader societal and environmental considerations. The Responsible Nations Index is the outcome of a comprehensive three-year research effort involving the World Intellectual Foundation, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai.
The framework of the Responsible Nations Index seeks to redefine the measurement of national success in an interconnected world. T.V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Aarin Capital and former Infosys CFO, stressed the importance of assessing how countries impact the planet and global citizens. He emphasized the collective responsibility to safeguard the Earth and ensure the well-being of all individuals, transcending national interests.
JNU Vice Chancellor, Professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, highlighted the university’s distinctive features during the event. With a significant faculty-to-student ratio and government funding, JNU stands out as a unique academic institution. Professor Pandit underscored JNU’s contribution to the Responsible Nations Index initiative, emphasizing the university’s commitment to global well-being and sustainability.
