World record holder and Paris Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh secured the first gold medal at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland. The 24-year-old Ukrainian high jumper cleared 1.93m on her first attempt and then reached 2.01m to claim the gold. Yuliia Levchenko, Nicola Olyslagers, and Angelina Topic earned joint silver medals after failing to clear 2.01 meters.
After her victory, Mahuchikh expressed her realization of how much she desired the gold upon arriving in Torun. American Chase Jackson clinched the women’s shot put gold with a best throw of 20.14 meters, surpassing the 20.00 meters mark. Canada’s Sarah Mitton took silver, while Sweden’s Axelina Johansson secured the bronze.
Italy’s Andy Diaz Hernandez defended his title in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 17.47 meters. In the men’s 60m final, Jordan Anthony of the United States emerged victorious with a time of 6.41 seconds. Kishane Thompson of Jamaica took silver, and Trayvon Bromell of the United States settled for bronze by a narrow margin.
