A ‘Yellow’ weather alert has been issued for seven districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated places on Saturday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai released a bulletin stating that the anticipated rain activity is a result of a lower atmospheric circulation prevailing over southern India. Coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning in some places.
Similar weather conditions are anticipated in one or two locations in interior Tamil Nadu. The IMD has specifically warned of heavy rainfall at isolated places in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, and Cuddalore districts on Saturday. A ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for these regions, indicating the potential for disruptive weather.
Residents are advised to be cautious, especially in low-lying and waterlogged areas. Additionally, a marine warning has been issued for fishermen, advising them to exercise extreme caution. Strong winds with speeds up to 60 kmph are expected over the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin Sea on Saturday and Sunday.
Fishermen are cautioned against venturing into the sea during this period. The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which weakened into a depression on Saturday morning, crossed the north Sri Lanka coast as a low-pressure area. While the system is expected to dissipate gradually, its residual impact, combined with prevailing atmospheric conditions, may continue to affect rainfall patterns in parts of Tamil Nadu over the weekend.
Authorities urge the public to stay informed with official weather bulletins and adhere to safety advisories issued by local administrations and disaster management agencies.
