The death of a young social media influencer at her matrimonial home in Lucknow has sparked accusations of dowry harassment and murder. Mansi, who hailed from Kanpur, married Sagar Rajput in 2024. Allegations from the deceased’s family suggest that significant cash, household items, and gifts were exchanged during the marriage, but the groom’s family allegedly persisted in demanding more, including a car.
Mansi’s family claims that she faced taunts and humiliation over dowry issues post-marriage, leading to emotional and physical harassment when the demands were not met. Despite informing her family about the challenges she faced at her in-laws’ home, the situation escalated. Her family made multiple trips to Lucknow to resolve the dispute, but tragedy struck when news of her death emerged, initially reported as a suicide but disputed by her relatives as murder staged to look like suicide.
Following a complaint by the victim’s family, the police have filed a dowry death case against six members of the husband’s family, including Sagar Rajput. The case underscores the prevalent problem of dowry-related violence in India, with data from the National Crime Records Bureau revealing 5,737 dowry deaths in 2024, emphasizing the ongoing challenges in addressing such crimes.
