Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most beloved festivals in India, celebrated with grandeur, devotion, and cultural vibrancy. At the heart of this celebration lies the Ganpati Katha—the divine story that explains Lord Ganesha’s birth, his elephant head, and his blessings as the remover of obstacles. Every year, devotees retell and relive these stories during Ganesh Chaturthi to honor Lord Ganesha’s wisdom, compassion, and protective energy.

As Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 approaches on Wednesday, August 27, it’s the perfect time to revisit these timeless tales that embody hope, faith, and resilience.

The Birth of Ganesha

According to the Ganpati Katha, Goddess Parvati created a child from sandalwood paste and dirt from her body while bathing. She breathed life into him and named him Ganesha, entrusting him to guard her chambers.

When Lord Shiva returned home, Ganesha—unaware of his father’s identity—stopped him at the door. Enraged by the boy’s defiance, Shiva severed his head in anger.

Parvati’s Sorrow and the Elephant Head

When Parvati discovered her son’s fate, she was devastated and furious. To console her, Shiva ordered his attendants to bring back the head of the first living being they encountered—which turned out to be an elephant calf. The head was placed on Ganesha’s body, restoring his life.

From that moment, Ganesha became known as Ganapati, the leader of Shiva’s ganas, and was granted the divine boon of being worshipped before all new ventures.

This tale emphasizes resilience, transformation, and the idea that new beginnings often emerge from adversity.

Ganesha and the Moon: Why You Shouldn’t Look at the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi

Another fascinating story in the Ganpati Katha explains why viewing the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi is discouraged.

One night, after feasting on laddoos, Ganesha’s mouse was startled by a cobra, causing Ganesha to fall. The moon god, Chandra, mocked him for this mishap. Enraged, Ganesha cursed the moon, declaring that anyone who looked at it on Ganesh Chaturthi would suffer Mithya Dosha—false accusations and misunderstandings.

This curse even affected Lord Krishna, who was once wrongly accused of stealing the Syamantaka jewel after accidentally seeing the moon. Since then, devotees avoid moon-sighting on Ganesh Chaturthi to protect themselves from misfortune.
