When it comes to losing weight, we’ve all heard the advice: healthy eating and regular exercise are the best ways to shed those extra pounds. However, for many people, achieving lasting weight loss through diet and exercise alone can be challenging. Some may find that despite their best efforts, the results are not as permanent as they hope. For these individuals, weight loss medications or tablets might seem like an appealing option. But how safe and effective are these products? Let’s explore.

What Are Weight Loss Medications?

Weight loss medications or tablets, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are designed to aid people who are obese or overweight with related health issues like high blood pressure or diabetes. These tablets are typically prescribed alongside lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. While they may assist in achieving weight loss, they are not magic pills, and their effectiveness can vary.

Some weight loss tablets are designed for long-term use, while others are meant for short periods. Here are a few FDA-approved options:

  • Wegovy (Semaglutide): Approved in 2021, this is a weekly injection used for long-term weight management. It works by reducing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness, helping individuals reduce their food intake.
  • Zepbound (Tirzepatide): Approved in 2023, this medication aids weight loss by targeting appetite and food intake. It’s also used in managing type 2 diabetes.
  • Orlistat (Xenical and Alli): Available in tablet form, this drug works by inhibiting fat absorption in the digestive system. While it is effective in the short term, it may result in mild weight loss. A lower-dose, over-the-counter version (Alli) is available.
  • Contrave: This tablet combines two medications to help with weight loss by targeting hunger and cravings. It should be taken with a low-fat meal under a healthcare provider’s guidance.

How Do Weight Loss Medications/Tablets Work?

Weight loss tablets operate in different ways, depending on their active ingredients:

  • Decreasing appetite: Some medications help curb your appetite, making you feel fuller for longer and thus eat less.
  • Increasing fullness: Certain tablets create a feeling of fullness, even after smaller meals.
  • Interfering with fat absorption: Tablets like Orlistat reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs from food.
  • Targeting cravings: Some weight loss medications address the psychological aspects of eating by reducing cravings.

The Effectiveness of Weight Loss Tablets

The effectiveness of weight loss tablets varies. GLP-1 agonists, including Wegovy, Zepbound, and Saxenda, are currently considered the most effective for weight loss. They help regulate appetite and food intake, leading to significant results for many users.

However, tablets alone cannot achieve long-term success. Factors such as diet, exercise, and overall health remain critical to maintaining weight loss.

Can You Stop Weight Loss Medications After Some Time?

Many people experience initial success with weight loss tablets. However, weight often returns once the medication is discontinued. Some tablets are designed for short-term use, while others require long-term treatment. A healthy lifestyle, including balanced nutrition and regular exercise, is essential for maintaining results.

Discussing your long-term plan with a healthcare provider is important to safely transition off the medication while sustaining progress.

Are Over-the-Counter Weight Loss Tablets Safe?

Over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss tablets may be tempting, but they are generally not recommended. Many OTC products come with significant side effects, lack scientific backing, and can be dangerous.

Always consult your healthcare provider before trying OTC weight loss tablets to avoid harmful interactions or side effects. Many such remedies make unproven claims that may not be reliable.

The Role of Exercise in Weight Loss

While weight loss tablets can assist, they cannot replace the benefits of regular physical activity. Exercise helps maintain weight loss, improves cardiovascular health, and boosts mood. Combining tablets with an exercise routine is often the most effective approach.

What If You’re Struggling with Weight Loss?

If losing weight feels overwhelming, small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Incorporate healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet. Practice portion control, and reach out to a healthcare provider or support group for guidance.

Weight loss medications or tablets can be effective tools for managing obesity or weight-related health conditions. However, they are not standalone solutions. A combination of medical support, healthy eating, exercise, and emotional encouragement from loved ones offers the best path to long-term success.

Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any weight loss medication or tablet to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for your needs.
