Welcome to Samosa Chat with Sangeeta, where spicy and multi-flavored conversations unfold! In today’s episode, we meet a brilliant scientist, researcher, and educator whose curiosity never rested and whose path to science was anything but ordinary – Dr. Siddhesh Kamat, Assistant Professor at IISER Pune (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research).

The Scientist Who Never Stopped Asking Questions

Dr. Siddhesh Kamat shares that in earlier times, scientists were often called natural philosophers – lovers of knowledge. True to this title, his own life reflects that philosophy. From a very young age, he was always full of questions – especially those rooted in science. Luckily, he grew up in an environment where curiosity was encouraged, not silenced.

Despite being born into a family of doctors – his parents, grandparents, and even extended family were all in the medical profession – Siddhesh took a different route. Unlike many, he wasn’t pressured to follow the same path. He admits, with a smile, that his love for sleep made the demanding schedule of a medical doctor less appealing! Instead, he decided to pursue science in a way that aligned with both his passion and lifestyle.

A Childhood Dream: Cricket or Chemistry?

Like many Indian kids, Siddhesh had a strong passion for cricket. In fact, he played seriously at the Mumbai Under-14 and Under-16 levels, and for a long time, dreamed of becoming a professional cricketer. But at the age of 15 or 16, he had a moment of self-realization — while he loved the sport, he might not make it to the national level. And back then, IPL didn’t exist, so the options were limited to Ranji Trophy or representing India.

Faced with a crossroads, he sat down with his parents, discussed the options, and chose to shift focus to academics. That decision would go on to shape his future in ways he couldn’t have predicted.

The Research Journey: From India to the U.S.

After completing his 12th grade, Dr. Siddhesh Kamat initially explored engineering but soon realized it wasn’t for him. While engineering had its merits, he found mathematics and physics overwhelming. Instead, he fell in love with chemistry.

He eventually applied for a Ph.D. in Chemistry and was accepted into Texas A&M University in the United States with a full scholarship — a significant achievement. There, he spent one and a half years immersed in hardcore chemistry. But as always, curiosity had its way.

He began exploring biology, and soon, his Ph.D. transformed into a multidisciplinary endeavor — half chemistry, half biochemistry. This exposure opened new avenues, and his academic interests grew deeper and wider.

A New Chapter: Biology and Beyond

Post-Ph.D., he pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at The Scripps Research Institute in California — one of the world’s leading biomedical research institutions. There, he focused more on biology and physiology, diversifying his skillset even further.

Today, as an Assistant Professor at IISER Pune, Dr. Siddhesh Kamat integrates his broad background in chemistry, biology, and biochemistry to conduct cutting-edge research and mentor future scientists.

The Power of Family Support in a Scientific Journey

Professor Siddhesh Kamat began by acknowledging the vital role his family has played in his growth as a scientist. From his parents who raised him with care and values, to his family members who stood by him through the rigors of his profession—he emphasized that his achievements are not his alone.

“They raised us with so much love and care, and now it’s our turn to do even better for the next generation.”

He noted how family support often goes unnoticed, yet it is the foundation that allows individuals to chase extraordinary goals. As he said, sometimes one family member shines spectacularly, but it’s only possible because others make silent sacrifices along the way.

Success in Science Needs a Supportive Ecosystem

While individual talent is important, Professor Siddhesh believes that true scientific success requires a thriving ecosystem. This includes passionate students, collaborative colleagues, supportive administrators, and a conducive work environment.

“Science never happens in isolation. You need a good ecosystem—students, collaborators, administrators. It’s always a team effort.”

This mindset highlights how science is a collective mission. A single person may start the spark, but it takes an entire team to fuel the fire of discovery.

Key Lessons from Dr. Siddhesh Kamat’s Journey

  1. Curiosity is the key – As Einstein said, “The important thing is to never stop questioning.”
  2. There is no one path to success – You can change direction, explore new subjects, and still achieve greatness.
  3. Family support matters – Encouragement from parents and mentors can make all the difference.
  4. Follow your instincts – Whether in sports or science, self-awareness and honesty with yourself lead to the right choices.
  5. Indian science is growing – Talented researchers like Dr. Siddhesh Kamat are shaping the future of science in India and globally.

Final Thoughts: Science is Cool!

In a world where children are often nudged toward conventional careers like medicine or engineering, Dr. Siddhesh Kamat stands as a refreshing example of what can happen when curiosity is nurtured, and choices are respected. His journey from cricket fields in Mumbai to advanced labs in the U.S. and now India is truly inspiring.

Whether you’re a student, a parent, or someone rediscovering your passion, let this be a reminder: science is cool, curiosity is powerful, and success has many flavors – just like a good samosa!
