At least 13 individuals have lost their lives, with several others in critical condition, following the consumption of poisonous alcohol in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, Maharashtra. An FIR has been lodged at Dapodi Police Station under various sections, including culpable homicide and causing harm through harmful substances. Police Commissioner Vinay Chaube mentioned that five suspects are in police custody, while three are held by the State Excise Department.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has responded promptly to the incident, directing strict action against those accountable. He has urged thorough investigations to ensure all involved in the illegal liquor trade face consequences. Initially, seven deaths were confirmed, but the toll later rose to 13, prompting the transfer of the case to the Crime Branch for further inquiry.
The tragic incident has left numerous families in mourning, with relatives of the victims recounting the harrowing events post the consumption of the toxic liquor. Describing the ordeal, a family member from Pune’s Pandhare Mala locality shared details of the impact on their loved ones. Additionally, the daughter of one deceased individual, Arun Vaman Dadar, shed light on her father’s drinking habits and the events leading to his demise.
Authorities have taken swift action, with police filing a case against an individual accused of supplying the lethal alcohol. Atul Kanade, Superintendent of Police of the State Excise Department, highlighted that the toxic chemical methanol was allegedly mixed into the liquor, resulting in the tragic fatalities. Efforts are underway to apprehend others associated with the illegal liquor distribution network.
