At least 18 people lost their lives, and six others sustained injuries in a tragic explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti near Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. The incident, which occurred at the Vanaja Firecracker Factory owned by Muthu Manickam of Govindanallur, caused shock and grief throughout the state. Reports suggest that over 30 workers were inside the facility during the blast, involved in their regular firecracker production tasks.

The explosion was believed to have been triggered by friction in the manufacturing process, causing a sudden ignition of explosive materials. The impact was severe, resulting in the complete destruction of at least four rooms within the factory. The sound of the blast was so powerful that it was heard up to 10 kilometers away, highlighting the intensity of the incident.

Firefighters from neighboring towns like Sivakasi, Sattur, and Virudhunagar swiftly responded to the emergency. They battled the flames for over an hour before gaining control, enabling rescue operations to commence within the extensively damaged premises. The rescue operation was described as challenging, with victims trapped under debris. Despite initial reports indicating 14 fatalities, the death toll later climbed to 18 as more bodies were discovered during the search efforts.

The injured individuals were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention, with their conditions under close observation. Superintendent of Police Sreenatha visited the site to supervise the ongoing rescue and investigative operations. Authorities have initiated a detailed probe to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion and to determine if safety protocols were adhered to at the factory. This tragic incident has reignited concerns regarding safety standards in firecracker manufacturing units in the Virudhunagar region, prompting expectations of a review of compliance measures post the calamity.
