A total of 1,955 candidates will participate in the upcoming Assembly elections in two states and a Union Territory, along with by-elections in four states, set to take place on April 9, as announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Among the states, Assam has 722 candidates vying for 126 Assembly seats, while Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry have 890 and 294 candidates respectively for their respective seats.
For the by-elections, three candidates will compete for a seat in Goa, 34 candidates for two seats in Karnataka, and six candidates each for seats in Nagaland and Tripura. The ECI has disclosed the data for the upcoming elections scheduled for April 9, including Assembly elections and by-elections.
The Election Commission had unveiled the election schedule for Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, in addition to bye-elections in six states on March 15. The deadline for filing nominations for these elections was March 23, with the withdrawal deadline set for March 26. The Returning Officers will follow the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, by publishing the list of candidates and maintaining election papers securely.
In a bid to enhance voter convenience, the ECI has introduced colored photographs of candidates on EVM ballot papers, alongside their serial number, name, and symbol in large font for easy voter identification.
