The 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council began in Shillong, Meghalaya, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah leading the meeting. Chief ministers, governors, and senior officials from the eight northeastern states are participating in the high-level discussions. The focus of the session at the State Convention Centre in Shillong includes regional development, connectivity, infrastructure, investment, tourism, power, education, and inter-state cooperation in the Northeast.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a picture from the meeting on the social media platform X, praising HM Shah as the “Architect of Peace in modern India.” CM Sarma highlighted the collaboration with Amit Shah, who chairs the North Eastern Council. The 73rd Plenary of NEC in Shillong aims to address developmental priorities and review ongoing projects in the region.
The gathering brings together chief ministers and governors from Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim to discuss strategies for economic growth, connectivity enhancement, and coordination among the northeastern states. The plenary session is expected to analyze recommendations from sector-specific task forces to identify growth opportunities and tackle developmental challenges in the region.
The annual plenary session acts as the primary policy-making platform of the North Eastern Council, facilitating collaborative development strategies between the Centre and the northeastern states. Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia emphasized unity towards a stronger, more prosperous #RisingNortheast on his X handle. The meeting’s agenda includes regional cooperation and the implementation of recommendations by task forces in various sectors like tourism, agriculture, sports, investment promotion, and infrastructure.
The NEC, operating under the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), plays a crucial role in planning, funding, and coordinating projects to promote balanced and sustainable development across the Northeast.
