Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee claimed that an elderly man died after being attacked by central forces in Udaynarayanpur, Howrah district during the West Bengal Assembly elections. Banerjee criticized the BJP-led government for allegedly misusing central forces during the polls. He accused the central forces of mistreating citizens at polling booths since the morning when voting began.
Banerjee stated that the central forces, under Home Minister Amit Shah, were acting like the BJP’s private army, causing fear among voters. He described an incident in Udaynarayanpur where an elderly man collapsed and died after being pushed and manhandled by the central forces. Banerjee condemned the violence against civilians, calling it reminiscent of the Sitalkuchi incident in 2021.
Around 90% voter turnout was recorded in 142 constituencies across six districts, including Kolkata, during the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections. The first phase of polling took place on April 23, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
