Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has approached the Calcutta High Court to challenge a summons from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police. The summons is related to a case involving a signature mismatch of some party MLAs on a resolution nominating MLAs to key positions in the Assembly.
Abhishek Banerjee’s petition seeks protection from coercive police actions, including arrest, in this case. The matter is set for a hearing on Friday before Justice Apurba Sinha Roy. Initially summoned on June 1, Abhishek Banerjee requested a 15-day extension citing health reasons after an assault incident on May 30.
The CID later issued a second notice for Abhishek Banerjee to appear on June 8. Notably, on that day, both Abhishek Banerjee and Mamata Banerjee are expected to be in New Delhi for an opposition meeting.
Abhishek Banerjee recently named opposition leaders in the West Bengal Assembly, submitting a resolution with Trinamool Congress legislators’ signatures. However, discrepancies in the signatures were pointed out by party members, leading to CID involvement and the subsequent summons for Abhishek Banerjee.
