Political attention in West Bengal is centered on the CID headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan in South Kolkata as Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress’ general secretary and Lok Sabha member, faces the possibility of appearing for interrogation regarding the signature mismatch case. The case stems from complaints by Trinamool MLAs alleging forged signatures on official documents submitted to the West Bengal Assembly.
Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has received three consecutive summons from the CID. If he fails to appear this time, legal experts suggest that the CID may take action against him. However, there is a legal safeguard in his favor as a scheduled hearing is set for Wednesday before a single-judge vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court, where he challenges the CID summons and seeks protection against coercive police measures.
Last week, Abhishek Banerjee petitioned the Calcutta High Court, requesting a fast-track hearing in the matter. While the petition was admitted, the plea for an expedited hearing was rejected, with the first hearing scheduled for June 10. The CID initially summoned him to appear on June 1, but he requested a 15-day extension due to medical reasons following an assault in South 24 Parganas district. Subsequently, a second notice for interrogation by June 8 was issued, which he could not attend as he was in New Delhi with Mamata Banerjee for an INDIA bloc meeting.
