Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee has requested additional time from the West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to appear for questioning in the signature mismatch case. The case stemmed from complaints by Trinamool MLAs alleging forged signatures on official documents submitted to the West Bengal Assembly.
Having missed the initial CID appointment on June 1, Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was issued a fresh notice to appear by noon on Monday. However, he traveled to New Delhi on Saturday to participate in a meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc scheduled for Monday.
Abhishek Banerjee informed the CID in a formal communication about his presence in New Delhi on Monday and highlighted the June 10 hearing at the Calcutta High Court regarding his petition challenging the CID summons. He also sought protection from coercive actions, including arrest, related to the case. Last week, his plea for a fast-track hearing was turned down by the single-judge vacation bench of Justice Chaitali Chatterjee Das, setting June 10 as the next hearing date.
