Actor Abhishek Banerjee revealed that his cameo in the second season of “Freedom at Midnight” is a homage to the late legendary actor Om Puri, who he admires for redefining the concept of a hero. Banerjee expressed his respect for Puri’s approach to roles, emphasizing that the size of the role never dictated his choices.
In the series, Banerjee portrays a character driven by vengeance after losing his pregnant wife to communal violence, eventually surrendering before Mahatma Gandhi. This narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the partition of India and Pakistan, exploring the religious and socio-political dynamics of that period. The same character was previously played by Om Puri in the film “Gandhi” starring Ben Kingsley.
When approached for the cameo, Banerjee felt compelled to honor Puri’s legacy by stepping into the character’s shoes. He acknowledged the significance of the opportunity, considering it a tribute to Puri’s portrayal in “Gandhi.” Despite recognizing that he cannot match Puri’s stature, Banerjee expressed gratitude for the positive reception his performance has garnered.
Reflecting on the impact of small roles, Banerjee highlighted the feedback he received post the release of “Freedom at Midnight” Season 2, underscoring the appreciation for his cameo. The season delves into the aftermath of Partition, capturing the turmoil of communal violence, refugee crises, princely state integration, and political tensions among leaders. Om Puri, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 66, was posthumously honored at the 89th Academy Awards for his contributions to world cinema.
