A man with a Rs 50,000 reward on his head was shot dead in a police encounter in Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred near a tubewell close to the Khandrawali Culvert during a joint operation by police teams. The deceased, identified as Mehtab, was a history-sheeter wanted in multiple criminal cases.
Mehtab, son of Manjura alias Baichen, was from Kairana town in Shamli district. He was involved in a robbery and attempted murder case reported early Friday. The police action followed an incident where two assailants robbed and shot at two brothers traveling on a motorcycle. The accused fled after the attack.
The police received information about the suspects’ movement and launched an operation near the tubewell. During the encounter, Mehtab was shot and a police sub-inspector was injured. Mehtab succumbed to his injuries, while the injured officer is receiving treatment. The absconding accomplice of Mehtab is being pursued by the police.
