A vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court has granted actor Parambrata Chatterjee interim protection from any coercive police actions, including arrests, related to an FIR filed against him at Gariahat Police Station. The FIR accused him of making a provocative social media statement and inciting post-poll violence after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Chatterjee sought to quash the FIR, leading to the court’s decision.
The single-judge vacation bench, headed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, provided Chatterjee with the interim safeguard after a hearing. While the police investigation will proceed, the actor has been instructed to cooperate fully with the authorities during the probe. Additionally, the Kolkata Police has been directed to present a detailed report on the matter at the next hearing.
The complaint leading to the FIR against Chatterjee was lodged by advocate Joydeep Sen. Notably, actress Swastika Mukherjee, daughter of the late Santu Mukherjee, also faced an FIR for allegedly supporting the contentious social media post. Chatterjee, unlike Mukherjee, did not respond to the police summons and instead sought legal recourse at the Calcutta High Court.
Chatterjee’s involvement in a meeting organized by BJP MLA Rudranil Ghosh at Technicians Studio has stirred controversy. During the meeting, Chatterjee disclosed the pressure he faced to support the previous Trinamool Congress government. A video clip of his statement went viral, prompting criticism and subsequent legal action against him.
