Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury penned a letter to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari addressing the confusion and unrest sparked by West Bengal government’s recent “Animal Slaughter Guidelines.” The guidelines, issued on May 13, 2026, mandated obtaining a fit-for-slaughter certificate before slaughtering certain animals and prohibited public slaughter. Chowdhury highlighted the concerns in Murshidabad district, where the notice has particularly affected the Minority community.
Chowdhury emphasized the diverse cultural traditions and religious practices in West Bengal, noting the need for respecting these customs. He urged the Chief Minister to intervene and suggested identifying specific locations in places like Murshidabad for communities to practice their religious customs without hindrance. The proposed approach aims to alleviate the unease among the Minority community, who form a significant part of Murshidabad’s population.
The Congress leader’s letter sought a resolution to the confusion surrounding the new guidelines, emphasizing the importance of enabling people to observe their socio-religious customs without obstacles. By designating specific locations for customary practices linked to religious beliefs, Chowdhury proposed a solution to ease tensions and uncertainties in Murshidabad district. He awaited the Chief Minister’s intervention to address the concerns raised by the notice.
