The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project. This phase will span a new 6.032 km corridor featuring five stations, with four above ground and one underground. The stations along this corridor include Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport.
On completion, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro network will extend to 77.63 km. This expansion is set to significantly improve public transportation by connecting the airport and key residential and commercial areas more efficiently. Additionally, the metro corridor’s development is expected to pave the way for potential sports facilities for the World Police Games 2029 and Commonwealth Games 2030.
Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Project aims not only to enhance connectivity but also to boost economic activities, tourism, and urban mobility for residents and tourists alike. By integrating vital areas into the metro network, the project is poised to reduce road traffic, enhance vehicle movement, decrease travel time, and improve overall road safety within Ahmedabad.
The extension of the metro rail network to the airport is anticipated to have a positive impact on the city by reducing carbon emissions. Moreover, the improved access to various parts of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, including the airport, railway stations, and bus depots, is expected to increase productivity by facilitating quicker commutes for individuals. The enhanced connectivity can also spur local businesses near the new metro stations, attracting investments and fostering development in previously less accessible regions.
