The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced the enforcement of stricter waste management regulations in the city. This includes mandatory four-way segregation of waste for all residential and commercial establishments. The new rules align with the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The regulations apply uniformly across all zones and wards of Ahmedabad. Under the updated system, households and commercial units must segregate waste into categories like wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste, and special care waste. Hazardous domestic waste falls under special care waste and must be stored separately for collection.
Dumping waste on roads, in open areas, drains, or water bodies, as well as burning or burying waste, will be considered illegal. Non-compliance with segregation requirements may lead to enforcement action under the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 and other environmental laws. The AMC has also enhanced norms for Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs), requiring them to process biodegradable waste on-site and hand over dry waste to authorized recyclers.
The objective is to reduce reliance on landfill sites and promote scientific waste management practices. Failure to comply with on-site processing or other provisions may result in punitive action under environmental laws. The AMC urges citizens and institutions to follow the new waste management framework, emphasizing that cleanliness is a shared responsibility and right.
