The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is offering shelter, food, and healthcare assistance to homeless individuals through 35 shelter homes in the city amid the summer heat. These shelter homes can accommodate up to 4,315 people and are currently operating at 80% capacity. Among them, 33 function as day shelters, while two operate as night shelters, ensuring residents receive regular meals and basic amenities.
In response to the increasing temperatures, the AMC is distributing Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to help residents combat heat-related illnesses and stay hydrated. Medical camps are being held at the shelter homes for general health check-ups as a preventive healthcare measure. Additionally, an “Employment Generation” program was recently organized at the Vasna shelter home under the DAY-NULM project, offering job opportunities to 11 residents in the city’s West Zone.
The UCD Department is actively conducting night drives at the Vasna shelter home, operating until midnight and relocating 53 homeless individuals during a recent night drive. AMC officials, including the Deputy Municipal Commissioner and the department’s Director, are overseeing the shelter homes’ operations and facilities. The civic body is also carrying out routine operations under the anti-beggar drive in collaboration with the Social Security Department, police department, and AMC’s UCD Department.
The shelter homes under AMC’s management are committed to providing essential services to homeless residents during extreme weather conditions in the city.
