On June 12, 2025, emergency crews rushed to the scene of the Air India flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had tragically crashed shortly after take-off, causing significant casualties. Among the chaos, the city’s K9 squad, including dogs trained in explosive detection, played a crucial role in the rescue efforts.
The crash resulted in the loss of 260 lives, with only one passenger surviving out of the 242 people on board. The incident led to a massive fire, devastating parts of the medical college complex and triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
The K9 Unit, alongside other emergency responders, faced challenging conditions due to the intense fire and unstable structures. Despite the risks, the unit remained on standby, ready to assist in the search and recovery operations.
The dogs, trained for various tasks including tracking human remains, played a vital role in locating victims within the wreckage. Their efforts, spanning over five days in harsh conditions, helped in identifying several victims through DNA testing.
