More than 15,000 individuals are utilizing Ahmedabad’s municipal swimming pools daily to combat the scorching summer temperatures. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has 21 operational swimming pools in the city, experiencing a notable increase in usage during school holidays. To meet the demand, the civic body has introduced additional batches to accommodate more residents.
Separate evening sessions have been arranged for learners above 12 years old and experienced swimmers, with special timings allocated for each group. In response to the heatwave, the provision of oral rehydration solution (ORS) at the pool premises has been initiated to prevent dehydration among users. Regular cleaning, supervision, and water quality checks are being conducted to ensure hygiene and safety standards are maintained.
The AMC is offering concessions to various groups, including municipal employees, women, students, and retired coaches, while district-level champions receive C-cards. Efforts are underway to discourage water wastage through social media campaigns. Each swimming batch, on average, sees over 100 participants, with coaching staff doubling as lifeguards. Future plans include the development of new swimming pools and recreation centers in preparation for the Commonwealth Games 2030.
Officials from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) recently visited AMC departments to study their management practices. The AMC provided a comprehensive tour of its facilities, including swimming pools, sports complexes, libraries, and auditoriums, across all seven zones. VMC officials expressed appreciation for the insights shared during the visit, which aimed to enhance operational efficiency and service quality.
