Ahmedabad achieved a Guinness World Record by planting 3.61 lakh saplings in just one hour using the Miyawaki method in the Bhadaj locality. This initiative, spanning 76,000 square meters near the Gota-Godhavi Canal, involved over 25,000 volunteers, making it one of the largest urban tree plantation drives in the city. The event, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saw the participation of various dignitaries, including Gujarat’s Chief Minister and other officials.
The plantation drive is part of a broader afforestation campaign aiming to plant 1.25 crore trees in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency and 50 lakh trees by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Utilizing the Miyawaki method, around 35 indigenous tree species were planted to create dense urban forests that support biodiversity and mitigate environmental issues. This effort signifies a significant step in Ahmedabad’s environmental conservation endeavors, emphasizing the importance of expanding green spaces for sustainable urban development.
Officials highlighted that the selected tree species will enhance urban green cover, absorb carbon, reduce air pollution, and regulate local temperatures as they grow. The successful campaign, which involved officials, organizations, educational institutions, and residents, underscores the city’s commitment to promoting green initiatives and sustainable growth. Future plantation initiatives with public participation will continue to enhance Ahmedabad’s green cover and environmental sustainability.
