The AIADMK is experiencing a surge in internal dissent, led by senior figures C.V. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani, who are intensifying efforts to challenge party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami. The dissident faction is exploring AIADMK party bylaws to potentially trigger a significant organizational confrontation in the near future. This group is considering utilizing a provision in the party’s constitution that requires the general secretary to call a special general council meeting within 30 days if a formal request is submitted by at least one-fifth of the council members.
Operating from Chennai’s MRC Nagar, the dissident leaders are engaged in consultations and strategy sessions to oust Palaniswami from his leadership position. Allegations against Palaniswami include making unilateral decisions that allegedly weakened the party, leading to a poor performance in the recent Assembly election. The AIADMK’s defeat in the 2026 polls, where it secured only 47 seats and lost its Leader of the Opposition status, has fueled discontent within the party.
There is a growing sentiment among rebel leaders that a leadership transition is necessary for the AIADMK to stay relevant in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape. The rebels are dissatisfied with Palaniswami’s reluctance to step aside from his chief ministerial aspirations, especially during discussions about projecting VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan as a potential consensus chief ministerial candidate with support from the DMK. The crisis within the party has taken a new turn, with expectations that some rebel MLAs may join Chief Minister Vijay’s Cabinet, despite a pending petition by Palaniswami seeking their disqualification under the anti-defection law.
