AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal emphasized that the UDF government will not shield any police officer accused of wrongdoing, emphasizing that everyone must abide by the law, including high-ranking officials. Venugopal highlighted that the decision on the fate of ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar, linked to the alleged assault on Youth Congress workers in Alappuzha, will be based on the Special Investigation Team’s final report. He stated that the law will be upheld without exceptions.
Venugopal’s statement gains significance as the government awaits the SIT’s report on the incident involving the assault on Youth Congress workers by security personnel of the former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Alappuzha, Venugopal’s Lok Sabha constituency. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has vowed to ensure accountability for any misconduct against Youth Congress workers, with five members of the ex-Chief Minister’s security team already suspended based on initial findings.
The focus has now shifted to ADGP Ajith Kumar, who previously oversaw the state police’s law and order wing and held a prominent position within the previous LDF government. The SIT’s evaluation of his involvement is anticipated to influence the government’s subsequent actions. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala clarified that the investigation is ongoing and there is no indication that Ajith Kumar obstructed the probe.
As Ajith Kumar nears eligibility for promotion to the rank of Director General of Police, pending the retirement of a senior officer, the SIT’s report assumes critical importance. Any adverse findings could potentially impact his promotion prospects, prompting close scrutiny of the impending report within the Home Department.
