All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rajkot has become a significant healthcare center for the Saurashtra region, witnessing a notable increase in critical surgeries and patient visits since its super speciality hospital began operations in February 2024. The institute, spread over nearly 200 acres, currently provides 22 speciality and six super speciality medical services all under one roof, with its foundation stone laid in December 2020.
The availability of advanced medical facilities at AIIMS Rajkot has allowed patients from Rajkot and nearby areas to receive specialized treatment locally, eliminating the need to travel to larger cities like Ahmedabad. Notably, the institute has seen a rise in critical surgeries, with around 180 such procedures conducted monthly. In 2024, 861 operations were performed, a number that increased to 1,927 in 2025.
AIIMS Rajkot’s success in handling complex medical procedures, including neurosurgery and urology, has reduced the reliance on major urban hospitals for advanced treatments. Patients have praised the accessibility and affordability of treatment, particularly benefiting middle-income and economically weaker families.
Dr. L. N. Dorairajan, the Executive Director of AIIMS Rajkot, highlighted the institute’s commitment to enhancing advanced healthcare services while ensuring affordability for all patients. The hospital has introduced an electronic medical record system, facilitating digital access to patients’ medical history, diagnostic reports, and treatment records.
The institute also offers diagnostic and laboratory services at reasonable rates, including CT scans and 3 Tesla MRI services. Patients can acquire a card for Rs 10, enabling consultations across all departments throughout the year. Additionally, in cases of accidents or emergencies, patients receive free treatment during the initial 24 hours of admission.
AIIMS Rajkot is further expanding its medical education infrastructure by increasing the number of MBBS seats from 50 to 75 starting the 2025-26 academic year. Since its inception, the institute has treated over 8.5 lakh patients, establishing itself as a prominent referral center for specialized healthcare services in Saurashtra.
