Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) leader and Naoda MLA Humayun Kabir presented himself to the police regarding a case linked to his recent contentious statements. Kabir showed up at Rejinagar police station in Murshidabad district before 11:30 am. Earlier, he had stated that if he faced arrest, 100 to 120 more individuals would willingly court arrest, with a prepared list in hand.
On June 26, Kabir made inflammatory comments against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during an AJUP gathering in Rejinagar. Following this, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari cautioned him, hinting at imparting a ‘lesson’ in response. Subsequently, complaints were lodged against Kabir at Rejinagar and Shaktipur police stations, leading to his summoning for interrogation. Additionally, he stands accused of intimidating the Officer-in-Charge of Shaktipur police station, for which he was summoned but failed to appear yesterday. Today, Kabir complied by appearing at Rejinagar police station.
In light of Chief Minister Adhikari’s warning, the police had already apprehended three AJUP leaders in connection with the controversial statements episode. These leaders were the event organizers in Rejinagar. Kabir’s appearance at the police station today for questioning was slightly ahead of the scheduled time. Party supporters have congregated near the Aam Janata Unnayan Party office close to Rejinagar police station since morning. Surveillance drones are reportedly being deployed by the police around the Rejinagar police station area.
Within a day of Chief Minister Adhikari’s caution, the three organizers of Humayun Kabir’s ‘controversial’ meeting were arrested on June 29. The arrested individuals, Golam Mustafa, Mohammad Aminul Haque, and Anisur Rahman, were apprehended by Murshidabad district police in separate operations based on FIRs from Rejinagar and Shaktipur police stations. The police actions were prompted by the contentious remarks made, as highlighted by the Chief Minister.
