Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has voiced his opposition to implementing the Women’s Reservation Bill without a recent population census. He emphasized the importance of accurate data for fair representation, stating that using outdated figures would compromise the entire process. Yadav highlighted the mathematical basis of the bill, which reserves one-third of seats for women, stressing the need for precise numbers derived from a current census.
Yadav pointed out that relying on 2011 census data for determining women’s representation would undermine the policy’s integrity. He insisted that conducting a fresh census before discussing or implementing the reservation is crucial to ensure fairness. The SP chief criticized the government, particularly the BJP and its allies, for pushing ahead with the reservation without updated demographic information, accusing them of attempting to mislead women through premature actions.
The SP leader’s stance comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of a special parliamentary session to expedite the process of introducing 33% reservation for women in legislatures. Yadav’s message to the government is clear: no census, no talks on women’s reservation, emphasizing the necessity of updated data for a just and effective policy.
