Akshaye Khanna has reportedly exited Ajay Devgn’s highly anticipated Drishyam 3, leaving fans and the film industry stunned. The decision comes in the wake of his blockbuster success in Dhurandhar, where his portrayal of Rehman Dakait earned widespread acclaim.

Akshaye Khanna’s Surprising Exit from Drishyam Franchise

Akshaye Khanna joined the popular Drishyam franchise with its second instalment in 2022, playing the role of IG Tarun Ahlawat alongside Ajay Devgn and Tabu. His performance as the determined investigating officer who goes head-to-head with Vijay Salgaonkar brought a new dimension to the franchise, earning praise from both critics and audiences.

The actor’s portrayal of IG Tarun Ahlawat was instrumental in elevating the tension and drama of Drishyam 2, which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2022. His character’s intense cat-and-mouse game with Ajay Devgn’s character was considered one of the film’s major highlights, making him an integral part of the franchise’s success.

He was expected to reprise his role in Drishyam 3, the final chapter of the thriller series. Fans had been eagerly anticipating the continuation of the rivalry between IG Tarun Ahlawat and Vijay Salgaonkar, expecting the concluding film to bring their conflict to a dramatic resolution.

However, according to a report by Bollywood Machine, Akshaye decided to quit the franchise just one day after the movie’s release date announcement teaser was unveiled. The timing of his exit is particularly surprising, given that the franchise had already announced its theatrical release date and begun promotional activities.

Creative Differences and Remuneration Dispute Behind Exit

The report suggests that Akshaye Khanna’s departure from Drishyam 3 stems from creative differences and disagreements over his remuneration. Following the massive success of Dhurandhar, the actor reportedly requested a fee hike and proposed changes to his on-screen look for the film.

Negotiations between Akshaye Khanna and the production team did not result in a mutual agreement, leading to his decision to walk away from the project. While discussions are reportedly still ongoing, neither the actor nor the filmmakers have released an official statement addressing the situation.

Drishyam 3 Release Date and Cast Details

Drishyam 3, directed by Abhishek Pathak who helmed the blockbuster Drishyam 2, is scheduled for theatrical release on October 2, 2026. The film marks the final instalment of the franchise that has captivated audiences with its gripping narrative.

The cast includes Ajay Devgn reprising his role as Vijay Salgaonkar, alongside Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Rajat Kapoor, and Kamlesh Sawant. With Akshaye Khanna’s reported exit, it remains unclear how the makers will address his character’s storyline in the concluding chapter.

Akshaye Khanna’s Career High with Dhurandhar Success

Akshaye Khanna is currently experiencing a career resurgence thanks to Dhurandhar, which has emerged as a box office phenomenon. Released on December 5, the film starring Akshaye Khanna and Ranveer Singh has grossed over 900 crore worldwide and continues its strong theatrical run.

Key Highlights of Dhurandhar’s Success:

  • Box Office Performance: The film has crossed the 900 crore mark globally, establishing itself as one of the biggest blockbusters of the year
  • Critical Acclaim: Akshaye Khanna’s portrayal of Rehman Dakait has received widespread praise from critics and audiences alike
  • Career Milestone: The success marks a significant high point in Akshaye Khanna’s acting career, reinforcing his position as a bankable star
  • Ongoing Theatrical Run: Despite being in theaters for over two weeks, Dhurandhar shows no signs of slowing down at the box office

Dhurandhar is planned as a two-part franchise, with the sequel scheduled for release on March 19, 2026. The second instalment will compete with Yash’s Toxic and Adivi Sesh’s Dacoit: Ek Prem Katha at the box office.

What’s Next for Drishyam 3?

As final negotiations continue between Akshaye Khanna and the Drishyam 3 team, fans await official confirmation regarding his participation in the film. The actor’s exit, if confirmed, would mark a significant change for the franchise that has relied on the dynamic between his character and Ajay Devgn’s Vijay Salgaonkar.

The makers of Drishyam 3 have not commented on the reports, leaving the situation unresolved as production moves forward for the October 2026 release.
