A major setback hit Algeria as their star goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, sustained a jaw and chin fracture, casting doubt on his participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. The injury occurred during a match between Granada and Almeria in the Spanish second division league, leading to Zidane’s substitution due to a concussion from a collision with an opponent.
Medical examinations confirmed the fractures, with the club stating that Zidane, in consultation with the medical team, will decide on the treatment plan. Luca Zidane, the son of French football icon Zinedine Zidane, is likely to miss the remainder of the season, raising concerns about his availability for the World Cup.
Having previously played for France at the youth level, Luca Zidane switched to represent Algeria, his paternal grandparents’ homeland, last year. He played a significant role in Algeria’s recent matches, featuring prominently in the Africa Cup of Nations and international friendlies.
Algeria, a five-time FIFA World Cup qualifier, faces uncertainty over Zidane’s participation in the tournament. The team, known for historical upsets and past successes, will kick off their World Cup campaign against Argentina in Group J, which also includes Jordan and Austria.
