An alleged sexual assault involving three men at the Government Arts College campus in Nandanam, Chennai, has led to strong political reactions. Opposition parties have criticized the ruling DMK for failing to ensure women’s safety in the State. AIADMK’s Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed shock and concern over the incident, highlighting the rising crimes against women in Tamil Nadu.
The AIADMK leader accused Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of being inactive in the face of increasing crimes against women. Palaniswami emphasized the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Tamil Nadu and the lack of security for women in public spaces under the current government.
Criticism extended to Health Minister Ma. Subramanian for allegedly being unaware of the assault. Palaniswami condemned the Minister’s statement as irresponsible, reflecting the government’s lack of seriousness in addressing crimes against women. The AIADMK reiterated its stance that women’s safety had been compromised under the DMK administration.
AMMK’s T.T.V. Dhinakaran joined the criticism, accusing the DMK government of a casual approach to crimes against women, particularly in Chennai. Dhinakaran highlighted the frequency of such incidents in Tamil Nadu and urged the Chief Minister to prioritize strengthening safety measures for women in urban areas and public institutions.
