Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah set a target to raise the green cover in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency to 20% by the 2029 parliamentary elections. He encouraged residents to ensure that every home has rooftop solar panels. Currently at 11.23%, Shah called for collective efforts to nearly double the greenery in the next three years.
Shah emphasized utilizing vacant land for tree plantation in housing societies to meet the set target. He also promoted the expansion of rooftop solar power in the constituency. Gandhinagar Lok Sabha has the highest number of solar rooftop installations among all parliamentary constituencies, as per a recent government assessment.
In addition to the plantation campaign, Shah urged apartment associations and homeowners to adopt solar systems. This move would help power common facilities like lifts and street lighting, reducing electricity bills. Increasing rooftop solar generation would lessen reliance on conventional electricity, cut down carbon dioxide emissions, and mitigate urban heat by absorbing sunlight.
Shah stressed the importance of two long-term public campaigns: planting trees and installing rooftop solar systems. He called for comprehensive participation in these initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability. Shah announced an expectation of planting over 1.25 crore trees in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency by the end of the day.
The tree plantation drive coincided with the inauguration of 101 Oxygen Parks and various civic development projects in Ahmedabad. This initiative aligns with a broader program focusing on urban infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
